ORGANISING SELF-STORAGE.

Lewis Barton • Jul 12, 2021

Whether you are waiting for your new home to be ready to move into or are working overseas for a few months or years. Perhaps you are simplifying your life or are finally heading off on that epic trip around Australia that you have been dreaming of for years; the process of organising and moving the contents of your home into a storage unit can be a daunting task.

A successful move into a storage facility requires a good deal of planning as there are a lot of things to consider. Whether it’s for two weeks or two years, household goods that are put into storage need to be prepared for storage correctly to ensure that they do not incur damage while they are stowed away.

At Toowoomba Sensitive Freight we have extensive experience in helping people manage the entire storage process. Everything from booking the facility, pre-packing, preparing goods to be stored, packing the storage unit with maximum space efficiency to arranging re-delivery at a later date. With so many successful moves into storage under our belt, I thought it beneficial to shed some light on the process.

When booking the storage facility there are a few important things to consider. Firstly, you need to make sure that the storage facility you choose meets the requirements that are important to you in areas such as security, pest control, climatic stability, access hours and affordability.  There are many storage facilities in Toowoomba, each offer a slightly different service. Our team at Toowoomba Sensitive Freight can recommend the facility best suited for your needs.

Once you have decided on a suitable facility, you need to make sure that you book the right sized shed. This involves ensuring that you have adequate space without paying fees for excess space that you don’t require (storage fees are usually based on the size of the unit). This is where we can help! By allowing us to complete an in-house inspection prior to the move, TSF can accurately determine the volume of the goods to be stored. Once we know the total volume, we can advise you on the storage shed that is the best and most cost efficient fit for your needs.

When moving goods into storage, give your removalist as much notice as possible of your need for a storage facility so that the move date and the shed booking date coincide - this will save on unnecessary storage charges.

When you are ready to move your goods back out of storage - make sure that you are up to date on your storage fee payment right up to the day that you empty the shed. You should also check that you’re not owed a refund from the storage facility if you have emptied the unit before the date that you have paid up to.
